ASSEMBLY SELECT COMMITTEE ON PRIVACY MEETS TO DISCUSS FINANCIAL PRIVACY

SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) announced today that the Assembly Select Committee on Privacy will hold an informational hearing entitled Financial Privacy: Where does California go from here? on Thursday, November 15, 2001 from 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM in the Palo Alto City Council Chambers.  The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

“Privacy is important to Californians,” said Simitian, Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Privacy.  “The public made that clear in 1972 when voters added privacy to the list of rights guaranteed by the California Constitution.  I take that constitutional mandate seriously.”

Simitian added, “Our job throughout the next year is to consider the privacy rights of individuals, the legitimate concerns of business, our desire to encourage the growth of information technology, and to find solutions that manage these competing interests fairly.”

Assemblyman Joe Simitian

This hearing will serve to provide Assemblyman Simitian, and other members of the Legislature who attend, with diverse views regarding issues of financial privacy.  The first segment of the hearing (2:30 - 4:00 PM) will be devoted to a general discussion of financial privacy.  The second segment of the hearing (4:30 - 6:00 PM) will be devoted specifically to the status of pending legislation (including Senate Bill 773 (Speier) which has been approved by the California State Senate but which has not yet been approved by the California State Assembly.)

Financial Privacy: Where does California go from here? will be the first in a series of informational hearings to be held throughout the coming year by the Assembly Select Committee on Privacy.  Due to the breadth of topics included under the umbrella of privacy and the depth of understanding needed to make informed decisions, the Committee will hold individual hearings on subtopics such as internet privacy, health care privacy, and privacy of government records.

Simitian says he will seek input from consumers, business and government agencies noting that, “Commercial, healthcare, financial, educational, and government institutions are certainly among the many sectors that are deeply engaged in the current debate over privacy – and the challenge of managing consumer information appropriately in this digital age.”

Members of the public wishing further information about the Select Committee on Privacy or its hearings may contact Assemblyman Simitian’s District Office at (650) 688-6384.
