CONSUMER RIGHTS GROUPS GIVE SIMITIAN 100% SCORE

SACRAMENTO – The Consumer Federation of California and the California Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG), two statewide consumer rights organizations, have recognized State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) for his 2009 voting record. Both organizations gave Simitian 100% scores on their annual legislative scorecards.

“Senator Simitian has been a consistent and reliable leader on the issues that consumers care about most,” said Richard Holober, Executive Director of the Consumer Federation of California.

“I’m gratified to receive this recognition,” said Simitian. “We’ve made important headway on consumer protection over the last few years, but there is still more work to do.  I will continue to introduce and support legislation that helps to safeguard consumers.”

Simitian’s Senate Bill 20 was one of the bills used by both organizations to rate legislators. The bill, which passed the Legislature but was vetoed by the Governor, would have required companies that lose their customers’ electronic personal information to provide key details when notifying consumers. Simitian authored California’s original security breach notification law, AB 700, in 2002.

The Consumer Federation of California and CALPIRG compile annual scorecards for members of the California State Legislature to educate the public about their representatives’ voting records.
