COUNTY SUPERINTENDENTS OF SCHOOLS NAME SENATOR SIMITIAN “LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR”

SACRAMENTO – State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) received the 2006 “Legislator of the Year” Award today from the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA) at the group’s monthly board meeting.

“Senator Simitian is a true leader in statewide education policy and, particularly on education funding issues,” said Dr. Julian Crocker, San Luis Obispo County Superintendent of Schools and President-Elect of the statewide County Superintendents organization.  “He is a strong and highly effective advocate for all students in California.  We are honored to recognize his dedication to public education with this award.”  Crocker has long been aware of Simitian’s work in the education arena; Crocker served as Superintendent of the Palo Alto Unified School District more than two decades ago while Simitian was serving his first term on the Palo Alto School Board.

“I’m gratified that the Superintendents have found my work worthy of recognition,” said Simitian.  “Our schools are the path to equal opportunity, to a workforce prepared to fill high wage, high skill jobs, and to global competitiveness for the country.”

CCSESA is a network comprised of California’s 58 County Superintendents and County Offices of Education.  These individuals provide instructional programs for students with unique needs including special education for severely disabled students, court and community schools for incarcerated and expelled youth, and programs for pregnant or parenting students. In addition, County Superintendents operate career and technical education, migrant education, outdoor education, and child care and child development programs.

A former local school board president, Simitian is currently a member of the Senate Education Committee and the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education, which review legislation that affects education policy and finance for the 6 million students in California.
Simitian also sits on the State Allocation Board, which oversees the distribution of billions of dollars for the construction and modernization of local public school facilities.  He chairs the Senate Select Committee on California’s Master Plan for Education.
