“GOVERNOR’S MAY REVISION 2001” TO BE TELEVISED AND AVAILABLE ON WEBCAST

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) announced today that the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) will present the teleconference, “The Governor’s May Revision – 2001,” on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 from 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM.  Ken Hall from School Services of California will moderate the telecast and be joined by Simitian, Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee for Education Finance, Senator Jack O’Connell, Chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee for Education, and Kerry Mazzoni, Secretary for Education.

The panel will offer impressions of the Governor’s “May Revise,” the Governor’s updated budget proposal which will be released on Monday, May 14, 2001, and which will frame the debate for the coming budget.  The State’s Legislative Analyst recently announced a dramatic reduction in revenues for the State, and the coming budget deliberations are expected to be among the most challenging in recent years.  The budget’s potential impact on schools will be the focus of the discussion.

“This will be a difficult year,” said Simitian.  “We hope the discussion on Tuesday provides local districts and interested residents with a sense of where the Governor and the Legislature may be headed.”

The broadcast may be viewed at any one of the 58 county offices of education throughout the state.  In addition, some school districts and other state agencies will downlink the program at their facilities.  The teleconference is also scheduled for webcast via the World Wide Web.  The bandwidth can only support 100 simultaneous connections at any time.  However, the program will be archived to allow for webcast viewing after the live production.

This broadcast is interactive and viewers are encouraged to either fax or email questions during the program to (800) 311-4909 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) .
