Sac Bee: California Legislature ready to ratchet up renewable energy targets

The Legislature was poised late Friday to approve two bills setting a course for California to ratchet up its already ambitious renewable energy targets.

But a showdown with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was brewing over the legislation, which smaller energy producers and smaller municipal utility districts are urging him to veto. [...]

Sen. Joseph Simitian, D-Palo Alto, author of Senate Bill 14, said Friday night that he “was cautiously optimistic” that amendments to the bills would address the governor’s concerns.

“This is a California governor,” he added. “I think a California governor is going to want to see California jobs.”

Assemblyman Paul Krekorian, D-Burbank, author of Assembly Bill 64, said on Thursday that his bill “isn’t perfect.”

But he said it complements Simitian’s bill by streamlining the process for approving renewable energy plants in California so they can be built more quickly and create jobs.
