Simitian extends ‘Oughta Be A Law’ contest deadline
State Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, has extended the deadline to Nov. 15 for his ninth annual There Oughta Be A Law contest, which invites constituents to submit ideas for new state legislation.
Winners will have their ideas introduced as legislation and eventually could have the opportunity to testify at a hearing on their bill in Sacramento. They will also have lunch with Simitian, whose district includes a portion of Santa Cruz County, and receive a California state flag that has been flown over the Capitol.
Since its inception, 15 submissions have been made into law. A law proposed by San Carlos resident Betty Lipkin last year and signed this month will help an estimated 1 million Californians safely dispose of some medical waste, such as needles and syringes.
Residents may enter the contest on Simitian’s Web site, senatorsimitian.com, or request an application by calling 425-0401. To view a list of past ideas signed into law, visit senatorsimitian.com/oughta/laws.
