Schools’ funds top Simitian’s ‘update’

More than 100 parents, educators and school board members packed into the Palo Alto Unified School District Board room Saturday morning to discuss the impact of the state budget crisis on education.

While the event hosted by state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, was dubbed an “education update,” the two-hour conversation turned into a broader discussion that included controversial state propositions and the state vehicle license fee.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed a 10 percent across-the-board budget cut in state spending to deal with California’s budget deficit, estimated at $14.5 billion. The governor’s proposal released earlier this month includes a $4 billion reduction in education funding.

“What part of really bad do people not get?” Simitian replied when asked how much money school districts should realistically plan for their upcoming budgets. “It’s bad ... people are looking at a pretty dire set of circumstances.”
