Don Burnett Bicycle Bridge Dedication

On Oct. 8 Senator Simitian spoke at the dedication of the Don Burnett Bicycle Bridge.

This past year, Senator Simitian authored SCR 35, which rededicated the Mary Avenue Bridge as the Don Burnett Bicycle-Pedestrian Bridge. SCR 35 recognized Burnett’s numerous achievements and contributions, especially to the cycling community

The concept for the bridge was originated in the early 1990s by Burnett, who served on the Cupertino City Council from 1993 until 2001 and was Mayor in 1995 and 1996.  As a councilman, Burnett played a major role in galvanizing support for the Mary Avenue Bridge, and when the steel suspension bridge opened on April 30, 2009, Burnett was one of four honorary residents to take the maiden bicycle ride across the bridge.

The bridge spans Highway 280 between Cupertino and Sunnyvale.
