SIMITIAN ANNOUNCES EDUCATION UPDATE MEETING

PALO ALTO - Assemblyman Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) announced today that he will provide an “Education Update” on February 4 for Santa Cruz County school board members, superintendents, teachers and parents. Simitian, Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, will give an in-depth update on the latest state budget issues affecting education, as well as education related legislation.

Simitian was invited by Santa Cruz City School District Board President Felix Robles and Cabrillo College Board Trustee Rachael Spencer. The purpose of the meetings, Simitian explained, “is to hear from folks about their specific budget and policy concerns - to talk about what the State should or shouldn’t do in the interest of our schools and our kids. If our work in the Capitol is going to reflect the concerns of local parents, educators and community members, conversations like these are absolutely essential.”
“Working closely with local education advocates was key to our success in holding off some of the most damaging proposed cuts last year,” said Simitian.  “Our schools face tremendous challenges in these tight budget times. Now is not the time to let our guard down.”

“Assemblyman Simitian is in a key position to advocate on behalf of our schools,” said Felix Robles, President of the Santa Cruz City School District. “We’re glad he can hear first-hand the concerns that folks in Santa Cruz have. It’s important that our voices be heard in Sacramento.”
