CALIFORNIA SENATE FELLOWS PROGRAM DEADLINE APPROACHING

SACRAMENTO –State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) is reminding interested applicants that the deadline to apply for the 2011-2012 California State Senate Fellowship program is approaching. The Center for California Studies at California State University Sacramento is accepting applications for next year’s fellows until February 23, 2011.

All fellows who are selected to take part in the program work full-time for 11 months in the office of a Senator or Senate committee.  Fellows also attend weekly university seminars to earn graduate units through the California State University Sacramento.
“I encourage any college grad, whether recently graduated or mid-career, who has a strong interest in public policy and politics to apply,” said Simitian.  “This is a great opportunity for individuals of any age to gain firsthand knowledge of the inner workings of the Legislature.”

Individuals can also apply for fellowships in the State Assembly, Judicial and Executive branches. Responsibilities include developing legislative proposals, researching and analyzing bills, responding to constituent inquiries, and writing press releases and speeches.
Simitian has had nine Senate or Assembly fellows in his office while serving in Sacramento and says, “Each has been a wonderful addition to our staff, made significant contributions to state policy and learned more in a year than they ever thought possible.”

Applications and information are available on the Center for California Studies’ website at http://www.csus.edu/calst/capital_fellows_programs_overview.html.

Applications for all fellowship programs must be postmarked by February 23, 2011.
