Simitian says more clean energy is urgent

As the warnings about global warming mount, so does the resolve of state Sen. Joe Simitian to take California’s clean energy policy to the next level.

The Palo Alto Democrat, who represents parts of Santa Cruz County, is pushing legislation that would require power companies to get 33 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020. His effort to raise the bar for the industry responsible for much of the state’s warming gases failed last year.

But Simitian says his odds are better now. Lawmakers have put the state’s distracting budget mess behind them, at least for now, and the prospect of federal stimulus money for green energy lies ahead.
