Simitian to host public forum in Palo Alto on school budget cuts

State budget cuts that school officials said could take $921,000 from Palo Alto’s schools will be the subject of a forum hosted by Senator Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, next week.

Simitian will host the public forum about Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed $4.4 billion reduction in state education funding next Saturday, Jan. 26.

Schwarzenegger announced sweeping cuts last week—including suspending Proposition 98, which guarantees minimum funding for schools—in an attempt to remedy the state’s $14.5 billion budget deficit.

The cuts could mean significant losses to the Palo Alto Unified School District’s budget, including $809,000 from the district’s General Fund in 2008-09, Chief Business Officers Bob Golton and Cathy Mak said at the Tuesday school board meeting.

In the Education Update forum next week, Simitian—a member of the Senate Education Committee—will go over the proposed cuts for about 20 minutes before taking questions and comments from community members for about 90 minutes.
