The Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water today passed a bill that seeks to improve the condition of California’s San Joaquin River Delta. Senate Bill 12 by Palo Alto democrat Joe Simitian would enact the Sacramento—San Joaquin River Delta, Clean Drinking Water, Water Supply Security, and Environmental Improvement Act of 2009 with the overarching goal of restoring the Delta ecosystem, which the author says he believes is in critical danger.

Simitian is pleased that his bill moved forward at the senate hearing although he was disappointed the vote was along partisan lines. “This is one of those times when folks need to step back and realize we’re all in this together. If everybody at the table insists on 100% of what they want, none of us are going to get a system that works,” Simitian told Examiner.com. “We’ve got to take a step back and ask ourselves not what do we want but what can we live with, what do we need?” The legislator said he has asked colleagues to step up to the table and argue their interests rather than their rigid positions. He says he thinks that if people do that, we can find solutions.
