STEINBERG, SIMITIAN COMMENT ON GOVERNOR’S VETO OF RENEWABLE STANDARD BILL

SACRAMENTO – Statements of Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) and Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) on Governor Schwarzenegger’s veto of SB 14, Senator Simitian’s bill that would have required all electric utilities to generate a third of their power from renewable resources:

“I’m disappointed that the Governor chose to issue a non-binding renewable energy executive order, rather than sign an enforceable law that would have created thousands of good clean energy jobs and reduced California’s reliance on outdated and dirty energy sources,” Steinberg said. “I hope the Governor keeps an open mind in future discussions about an enforceable state law, because California has an opportunity to lead the nation on this very important issue.”

“I’m disappointed,” said Simitian. “But I’m encouraged by the Governor’s willingness to keep the conversation going. I’m hopeful we can find common ground. If we’re serious about our commitment to renewable energy, the commitment to 33% by 2020 needs to be nailed down in state law.”

Sens. Steinberg and Simitian sent Governor Schwarzenegger a letter requesting continued productive conversations working toward adopting an enforceable renewable portfolio standard. See the letter attached.
