World Press Freedom Day 2012: May 3

May 3, 2012, is being observed as World Press Freedom Day around the globe.

Here in California, Senator Simitian has authored Senate Joint Resolution 22, which declares that the State Legislature recognizes May 3 as World Press Freedom Day 2012, commends journalists around the world for their essential role in promoting accountability in government and strengthening civil society, shows respect for journalists who stay committed to their profession despite numerous personal threats to their safety, and remembers those journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

You can learn more about World Press Freedom Day from the International Press Institute.  IPI is helping to tell the stories of brave journalists persevering in difficult and dangerous environments.

Senator Simitian is hosting a media call to raise awareness of World Press Freedom Day on Monday, April 30, at 11:00 a.m.  He’ll be joined by Anthony Mills, acting deputy director of the International Press Institute, and Jim Clancy, CNN anchor and representative of IPI’s North American Committee.

Senator Simitian has penned a longer statement on World Press Freedom Day that’s available for publication for any media outlet wishing to use it.
