SB 221: Small Claims Court Increase (2011)

Summary

SB 221 aims to raise the jurisdictional limit for Small Claims Court from $7,500 to $10,000. The limit was last raised in 2006 with SB 422 (Simitian). Research indicates that lawyers rarely take a case worth less than $25,000.  Therefore, individuals with cases falling between $7,500 and $25,000 are left oft times without an opportunity to seek relief.

After the bill passed the Legislature, Senator Simitian sent a letter to the Governor urging his signature.
