Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, and the California Highway Patrol reminded drivers Monday that they have to switch from hand-held cell phones to hands-free devices by July 1.

The new law, authored by Simitian, prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from using any type of cell phone while driving. Anyone over 18 can drive and talk on the phone while using a hands-free device.

Get ready to put down that cell phone if you’re behind the wheel. Starting July 1, 1008, the state’s new hands-free cell phone law goes into effect. You can still use your phone, you just can’t hold it in your hand if you’re driving.

Soon, driving and holding a cell phone will be illegal in California, and talking on the phone in your car will look safer with a hands-free set.
