      Education Update Meetings Announced

PALO ALTO – Trying to stay one step ahead of the growing concerns of parents and teachers on the proposed budgetary slashes in education, Assemblyman Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) has scheduled two community meetings this month. The informal gatherings will focus on the Governor’s projected cutbacks.

The timing of the meetings is crucial, according to Simitian, with Governor Davis’ revised budget due out next week. Many early expectations are that the current deficit of $35 billion may actually be even higher.

“It’s a critical time. We need to sit down, stay level-headed and act responsibly,” Simitian said. As Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee of Education Finance, the Assemblyman is in the position to prompt change in a positive direction.

“Both meetings this month will address major concerns of educators and students, as well as the specifics of the proposed cuts in terms of classes, after-school activities and staff. More importantly, we’ll discuss possibilities on where to find additional sources of revenue,” Simitian said.

The two education update meetings, which are open to the public, will be held:

    Sunday, May 18, 10 am –12 pm

Palo Alto Unified School District Board Room

    25 Churchill Rd.

    Saturday, May 31, 10 am – 12 pm
