Momentum is growing for the bill, according to Simitian. Last year, for the first time, the bill passed in the State Assembly, but stalled in the Senate. "I'm trying again because the bill will save lives. I’m cautiously optimistic our perseverance will pay off," he said.
Earlier this month, the Los Angeles City Council voted to support Simitian’s bill and a similar measure is pending in Washington DC. New York has prohibited drivers from using hand-held cell phones since 2001. "I think the timing is right," Simitian said.
