Simitian was invited by Santa Cruz City School District Board President Felix Robles and Cabrillo College Board Trustee Rachael Spencer. The purpose of the meetings, Simitian explained, "is to hear from folks about their specific budget and policy concerns - to talk about what the State should or shouldn't do in the interest of our schools and our kids. If our work in the Capitol is going to reflect the concerns of local parents, educators and community members, conversations like these are absolutely essential."

"Working closely with local education advocates was key to our success in holding off some of the most damaging proposed cuts last year," said Simitian. "Our schools face tremendous challenges in these tight budget times. Now is not the time to let our guard down."
