PALO ALTO – State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) will host a community celebration in honor of Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto, the 11th State Senate District’s Woman of the Year, in Cupertino on April 23.

WHAT:        Community celebration hosted by State Senator Joe Simitian honoring Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto, 11th Senate District Woman of the Year.
WHEN:        Thursday, April 23, 2009. 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

WHERE:      West Valley Community Services
10104 Vista Drive, Cupertino, CA 95014

The celebration is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

It will take place at West Valley Community Services (formerly Cupertino Community Services), a nonprofit organization led by Nakano-Matsumoto. The organization provides food, shelter, and emergency assistance in the Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, and West San Jose communities.

“Naomi is one of our local heroes,” Simitian said. “Through her leadership, our neighbors have somewhere to turn in these tough economic times. This reception is a chance for our community to thank Naomi for the difference she makes for local families in need.”

In accepting the award, Nakano-Matsumoto emphasized that she played one part in a collaborative effort. “I’m deeply honored to receive this award, but it is not mine alone. At West Valley Community Services, more than 100 active volunteers, 20 staff, 20 hands-on board members, and hundreds of generous donors work together to provide vital, basic human needs services. I want this to be their event as well,” she said.

The Woman of the Year award is given annually by members of the California state legislature to outstanding women who live or work in their districts.
