SB 1582: Sea Marshals on Cruise Ships (2008)

Summary

This bill would require cruise ships embarking from ports in California to have on board a licensed marine engineer, granted peace officer status under this bill, to monitor matters of public safety and environmental compliance.  To fund the program, this bill would authorize the Department of Justice to assess a fee on a ship of $1 per berth per day the ship is operating in California’s waters.
