State Sen. Joe Simitian today announced that a Soquel woman, San Carlos woman and San Jose fire captain are the winners of his annual “There Oughta Be A Law” contest.

The contest, run for the past eight years by Simitian, D-Palo Alto, offers residents an opportunity to submit suggestions for new legislation. This year’s contest drew 331 proposal entries. Fourteen new state laws based on contest entries have been enacted from previous years.

“I was gratified by the number of thoughtful, positive ideas that we received,” Simitian said. “Despite all the challenges our state is facing this year, people are still taking the time to get involved. This is proof positive that folks want to make a difference.”
