SIMITIAN TO BE NAMED THE POWER ASSOCIATION OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA’S ‘PERSON OF THE YEAR’

SACRAMENTO – The Power Association of Northern California (PANC), a nonprofit energy and utility association, has chosen State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) as their “Person of the Year.” Simitian is being recognized for his work authoring SB 2X, a bill which made California a national leader in its commitment to renewable energy. Simitian will be presented with the award on Thursday in San Francisco.

“Every year, the board of the Power Association of Northern California selects an individual who has had a significant impact on the energy industry,” said Jan Pepper, a board member of PANC and Electric Division Manager of Silicon Valley Power. “For this year, it was an easy choice to select Senator Joe Simitian, to recognize his success in passing legislation to increase California’s renewable portfolio standard to 33% by 2020.”

Signed into law last year, SB 2X requires private and public utilities to obtain 33 percent of their electricity from renewable resources by 2020. U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu has called Simitian’s SB 2X a “groundbreaking piece of legislation that would put California at the forefront of the clean-energy economy.”

“It’s extremely gratifying to receive this award from industry and utility leaders – people who know the issues, challenges, and change that this legislation will bring,” said Simitian.

The award presentation will take place from 6-9 p.m. at Carnelian by the Bay, 1 Ferry Plaza, San Francisco. For more information about PANC, go to http://www.panc.org
