ON BREAST CANCER AWARENESS AND DETECTION
PALO ALTO – Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo alto), Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Breast Cancer Awareness and Detection, invites the public to attend an important “Are You Dense?” forum on Tuesday, September 11th to talk about the risks associated with dense breast tissue and what women should be discussing with their doctors.
Forty percent of women who get mammograms have dense breast tissue, which both increases their risk of breast cancer and makes it harder to detect cancer on mammography images. But most women do not know what their density level is. Simitian is the author of Senate Bill 1538, legislation to improve cancer detection by requiring that women be informed of their breast density and how that may affect mammography results. The bill also encourages women to speak with their physicians about whether additional screening might be warranted.
