SIMITIAN TO HOLD “EDUCATION UPDATE” INVITING PUBLIC TO JOIN CONVERSATION ON K-12 CHALLENGES

PALO ALTO - State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) will hold an “Education Update” meeting on Saturday, January 28th, in Palo Alto to discuss this year’s proposed legislation and the budget challenges facing our public schools.

Simitian emphasized that the update is an opportunity for parents and the public generally, as well as school board members, superintendents, teachers, and other education advocates, to join the discussion on the proposed state budget’s impact on public education, and get an update on current K-12 legislation.

“I’m particularly eager to hear not just from educators, but from anyone who cares about kids, as California schools face continuing budget challenges,” said Simitian. “Education is the state’s most important obligation, and all Californians need to be involved.”
“Schools are coping with reduced resources and higher expectations,” Simitian said. “These conversations are critical to help the Legislature understand what is actually happening in the classroom.”

Simitian, a member of the Senate Education Committee, will provide an update on Gov. Jerry Brown’s budget and on K-12 policy proposals pending in Sacramento. He will also provide an update on the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010, which he authored. Starting in the fall of 2012, the Act raises the age at which children can start kindergarten and establishes a new transitional kindergarten. Simitian will then open the floor to questions, concerns, and comments.

Since being elected to the California Legislature in 2000, Simitian has held regular “Education Updates” in his district.

“These ‘Education Updates’ give me an opportunity to stay in touch with local education leaders, parents and advocates,” said Simitian. “Knowing what they’re thinking helps me better serve our local schools and kids.”
