SIMITIAN TO UNVEIL PRESCRIPTION DRUG REDISTRIBUTION BILL: SAYS IT’S “JUST THE RIGHT MEDICINE” TO PREVENT DRUG WASTE, IMPROVE HEALTH

On Friday, State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto), in partnership with a Stanford-based nonprofit, will introduce legislation to redistribute unused prescription drug medication to Californians in need. This new measure builds on legislation passed by Simitian in 2005.

Every year, an estimated $9 billion in unused medicine and medical supplies are wasted in the United States. At the same time, an estimated one-third of California’s uninsured forgo prescription drugs due to cost. Simitian’s legislation is designed to address those two problems.
Simitian will be joined at the event by the co-founders of SIRUM (Supporting Initiatives to Redistribute Unused Medicine), a nonprofit dedicated to making the medicine donation process easier; R. Deane Kirchner, RN, director of nursing for Lincoln Glen Skilled Nursing in San Jose; and Mymy Phu, a pharmacist with Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, among others.
