SB 1166: Data Breach Notification (2010)
Summary
Senate Bill 1166 would strengthen the state’s security breach notification system by establishing core content for data breach notification. Information such as the type and time of the breach along with a toll-free phone number of major credit reporting agencies would be provided to consumers whose information was compromised. The bill would also require public agencies and people subject to the law to send an electronic copy of the breach notification to the Attorney General and the California Office of Privacy Protection if more than 500 Californians are impacted. SB 1166 is a reintroduction of Simitian’s SB 20 (2009), which was vetoed by the Governor.
After this bill passed the Legislature, Senator Simitian sent a letter to the Governor urging his signature on this bill.
