SB 514: Dextromethorphan: sale to minors ban (2011)

Summary

Senate Bill 514 would prohibit the sale of non-prescription drugs containing dextromethorphan (DXM) to a person under the age of 18.  Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant commonly found in over-the-counter cold medications.  Minors purchase and consume large quantities of products that contain DXM in order to get high.  Ingesting too much cold medicine can be just as hazardous as drinking too much alcohol.  And it is cheap, easy and legal for young people to obtain.

After this bill passed the Legislature Senator Simitian sent a letter to the Governor  urging his signature.
