Senate bill would boost Santa Cruz County effort to preserve open space

State Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, with help from Assemblyman Bill Monning, D-Monterey, has introduced legislation that would make it easier for Santa Cruz County to establish an open space district.

Senate Bill 211, which eliminates certain startup requirements for such a district, would move the county further ahead in a longtime effort to use public funds to buy and protect undeveloped land—similar to what conservation districts do in Simitian’s neighboring Santa Clara County. [...]

“They’ve worked very well over the long haul in preserving the quality of life and natural resources that make our region so attractive,” Simitian said. “Santa Cruz County now has the opportunity to shape its future.”
