SIMITIAN TO CHAIR KEY ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEES

SACRAMENTO - Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) announced that he has appointed State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) as Chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Resources, Environmental Protection, Energy & Transportation.  Steinberg also reappointed Simitian as Chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, with jurisdiction over environmental quality, air quality, toxics, water quality, and hazardous waste.

“I’m gratified by the appointments,” Simitian said.  “I look forward to building on my previous environmental work as Chair of the Environmental Quality Committee, and to this new opportunity to oversee the budget subcommittee that will ensure that California’s environmental protection efforts are adequately funded.”

“Senator Simitian has a long history of good work on environmental issues—legislation that has led to protections for our oceans, air and forests,” said Steinberg.  “And he knows the budget inside and out.  He’s a natural choice for both positions.”

For the first time in several years, the Budget Subcommittee on Resources will now include transportation funding.

In addition to chairing these committees, Simitian will serve as a member of three other standing committees that affect environmental policy: Energy, Utilities and Communications; Natural Resources and Water; and Transportation and Housing.

Simitian added, “I’m fortunate to represent a district that understands that our quality of life includes not only good schools and safe neighborhoods, but clean air, water and open space.”
