SIMITIAN TO HOLD “EDUCATION UPDATES” –  FOCUS ON GOVERNOR’S BUDGET AND “YEAR OF EDUCATION”

SACRAMENTO - State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) announced today that he will host a pair of “Education Update” meetings on Saturday, January 26 in Palo Alto and Thursday, February 7 in Santa Cruz for local school board members, superintendents, teachers, parents, and other education advocates.

Simitian timed these meetings with the release of the Governor’s January budget proposal.  Simitian said, “I’m particularly anxious to hear from folks given these tight budget times and the Governor’s proposal that the state suspend Proposition 98, the voter-approved minimum guarantee for education funding.”

Simitian added, “these ‘Education Updates’ give me an opportunity to know what local education leaders and advocates are thinking, and what matters most to them.  Knowing that helps me better serve our local schools and kids.”

As a member of the Senate Education Committee and the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education, and as Chair of the Senate Select Committee on California’s Master Plan for Education, Simitian will provide an in-depth update on K-12 education funding and legislation pending in Sacramento.  He will then open the floor to questions, concerns, and comments.
