This story from KPIX CBS 5 describes Senator Simitian’s SB 966, a 2006-2007 winner of the “There Oughta Be a Law” contest that helps address the problem of incorrectly disposed prescription medicines.  The video prominently features Rebecca Kassel, the Santa Cruz County high school student who submitted the contest entry that became SB 966.

Senator Simitian speaks on behalf of his bill, SB 966, on the Senator Floor. SB 966 would require the Integrated Waste Management Board to identify and develop model programs for the safe disposal of household generated pharmaceutical waste. (The bill was subsequently passed by the Senate and sent to the Governor.)

Senator Simitian taped in interview with KQED on invasive species in Bay Area waters. His legislative work in this area includes SB 497 (2006), which enacted stringent new standards on ballast water discharged from vessels in the Bay.

Senate Democrats unveiled legislation today to improve the management of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Senate Bill 27 will, among other things, bolster emergency preparedness, identify levees that need strengthening and enhance wildlife restoration.
