California Senate OKs bill banning student monitoring devices

Legislation approved Monday by the state Senate would ban public schools from using radio-wave devices containing personal information about students to take attendance and monitor students’ movement around campus.
The bill by Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, was sent to the Assembly on a 28-5 vote. It would prohibit schools from requiring students to carry radio frequency identification cards or badges that transmit their personal information, such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, birth dates or identification numbers.
