EDUCATION ADVOCATES INVITED TO MEET WITH SIMITIAN TO SHARE LEGISLATIVE IDEAS

SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) announced that he is hosting two “Education Update” meetings in October for San Mateo County and Santa Clara County school board members, superintendents, teachers, parents, and other education advocates.

“The purpose of the Education Update meetings is to hear from education leaders about what kinds of state legislation they would like to see introduced next year… as well as legislation they don’t want to see,” said Simitian. “If my work in the Capitol is going to reflect the concerns of my district, conversations like these are absolutely essential.”

As Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, Simitian will also provide an update on state budget issues and invite questions, concerns, and comments regarding legislative and funding priorities.  “Working closely with local education advocates was a key reason we were able to successfully hold off last year’s proposed cuts to “basic aid” school districts. With a new Governor, we don’t know what next year will bring, but it’s never too early to start preparing.”

Simitian held two Education Update meetings in the spring of 2003, focused on state budget issues.
